Master Class Imaging
This master class will be led by two experts in the field, dr Dennis van ‘t Ent (physics) from the VU University Amsterdam, and dr Miranda van Turennout (brain imaging) from the FC Donders centre, Nijmegen.
In the first hour, a basic explanation of the MRI technique will be presented followed by a tutorial on structural imaging of total and regional brain volumes. The second hour details the basic principles in the use of functional MRI to localize and quantify changes in brain activity during affective or cognitive processing.
1. Basics of sMR Imaging Dennis van ‘t Ent (9.30-10.30)
- Basics of magnetic resonance imaging
- Volumetric comparisons of individuals using
* total gray and white brain matter
* regional volumes (segmentation)
* voxel-based mapping (VBM)
- Interpretation and limitations
Break (30 mins)
2. Basics of fMR Imaging Miranda van Turennout (11.00-12.00)
- Basics of functional magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD)
- Experimental design of functional MRI studies
- Analysis strategy
- Graphic presentation of findings
- Interpretation and limitations
